If you are native to New Mexico, chances are you have seen our iconic state flag. The bright yellow background with the red zia sun symbol offers the simple yet memorable design that is our state flag. But have you ever wondered what the symbol represents? There are four sets of four sun rays radiating from the center of the sun and the number four is sacred to the Zia tribe of New Mexico. The rays represent the four seasons (summer, spring, winter and fall), the four directions (north, south, east and west), the four points in a day (sunrise, noon, evening and night) and the four stages of life (childhood, youth, adulthood and old age).
