Many already know that Las Cruces means “the crosses” in spanish. The exact origin of the name is unknown. However many believe it is named after the graves of unknown soldiers marked by crosses. In the pursuit of New Mexico territory, there were many battles that resulted in death. So it is assumed by most that the name is a nod to the lives lost. Either way the name Las Cruces is just as pretty as the city itself.
