Las Cruces Real Estate | Historical Fact - State Fossil

New Mexico is rich with interesting fossils including mammoths, ancient human footprints, and even Paleozoic marine invertebrates. However, the state fossil is actually a small bipedal carnivorous dinosaur called the Coelophysis. These fossils were originally found here in New Mexico at Ghost Ranch near Albuquerque. These dinosaurs date back to the late Triassic (205 million years ago) and were streamline hunters who would hunt small game since they themselves only stood at about 3 feet tall. This was made the official state fossil of New Mexico in 1981, since they are so prevalent in the state.
