Las Cruces Real Estate | Historical Fact - State Fish
If you're a fisherman, then maybe you already know what the state fish is. But we were surprised to learn that our state fish is called the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout. This species of fish is native to the cold mountain streams of Northern New Mexico and lives up to 8 years and get to be about 10 inches long. These fish are yellow to greenish and have black spots along their bodies and red stripes on their throat, making them pretty recognizable. The red stripes are where they get their name from. These awesome fish can be spotted in rivers and streams throughout the state, so next time you're on a fishing trip, keep an eye out for our state fish!
