Las Cruces Real Estate | Historical Fact - Spadefoot
The New Mexico Spadefoot is the official state amphibian of New Mexico. These small little frogs only get to be around 2 ½ inches in length. They are found throughout New Mexico but can also be spotted in states like Texas, Arizona and Oklahoma. This species of frog is pretty cool because they have vertical pupils and range in color from green shades to gray shades. They like to dig and burrow in moist soil. The sound these little frogs make has been described as a fingernail brushing across the teeth of a comb. They excrete an odor when confronted by a predator which smells like roasted peanuts. Next time you see one of these guys out and about, maybe pick them up to see if they start smelling like roasted peanuts.
