Las Cruces Real Estate | Historical Fact - Sandia Hairstreak

The state butterfly of New Mexico, though not widely recognized, is beautiful and they are called the Sandia Hairstreak. Their unique color makes them beautiful to watch as they flutter by. They reside in New Mexico and parts of Colorado, Texas and Mexico in early spring and into summer. A few cool facts about these guys are that the adults are more active in the morning and tend to retreat by night time and the species are well adapted to droughts, which as we know can occur often in our desert environment. Next time you’re taking a walk, look up to the skies and you just might spot one of our state butterflies!
