Las Cruces Real Estate | Historical Fact - NM Natural Hazards

If you're talking about natural hazards and risk factors associated with our area of the USA, New Mexico is actually a pretty safe area to live in. We rarely experience dust storms, we do not live in an area at risk of hurricanes, landslides, tsunamis or earthquakes. The one thing that New Mexico has to be careful of is flash floods. This is because our desert soil is not the best at absorbing the rain water as quickly as is required. Because of this, we experience flash flooding whenever there is heavy rain. Since Las Cruces is in a valley, we have a dam in place to prevent the city from flooding. This is definitely important to know about our city, but hopefully if you’re new to Las Cruces, you feel better knowing that we live in a pretty safe area.
