Las Cruces Real Estate | Historical Fact - Luminarias 2022
If you are new to the Southwest or New Mexico, you may have never experienced the beauty of luminarias (Spanish for small bonfires) lighting up the streets, walkways and houses during the Holidays. But the history of these little decorations date as far back as the 16th century, where it was recorded that the Spanish would light bonfires to light the way for people to make it to midnight mass. It was then introduced by the Spanish to Native Mexican people who used small lanterns to light up pathways for 9 days starting on December 16 up until Christmas. This was symbolic of Christ’s birth and illumination of the spirits. Nowadays it has evolved to a fun and unique way to decorate for the Holidays. .
