Las Cruces Real Estate | Historical Fact - Loretto Chapel Spiral Staircase

In our great capital city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, there are several very historic churches and chapels. One of them being Loretto Chapel built in 1878. This chapel has a fascinating spiral staircase. This staircase is special because, when it was originally built, no nails and no glue was used to build the stairs. As well, no beams for support were used either. This meant that the staircase was self-supported. The spiral shape allows for the staircase to remain stable. The other mystery of this staircase is that the man who built them is unknown. The story goes, the nuns of the chapel were seeking a staircase that was not too big as their chapel was small and a strange craftsman showed up on their doorstep one day. He told the sisters that he could build them a staircase in the small space but his one condition was that he wanted to work in privacy. When the staircase was finished and the sisters of the chapel wanted to thank him, he had already left town. This fun mystery is one more thing to love about our state capital of Santa Fe and is one more good reason to visit.
