Las Cruces Real Estate | Historical Fact - Elephant Butte Dam

New Mexico has the smallest ratio of surface water to land mass in the United States. This percentage is at 0.02% and that is because New Mexico does not have a lot of natural lakes. A lot of New Mexico’s surface water comes from man made dams. One example that locals of Las Cruces might be familiar with is Elephant Butte Dam. Elephant Butte Dam was created to irrigate water to the nearby cities, including Las Cruces. This has created a large reservoir, known as Elephant Butte Lake, which today is used by locals for recreational use and family fun. If you get a chance to go to Elephant Butte, we highly recommend spending the day on the lake with family and friends.
