Las Cruces Real Estate | Historical Fact - Black Bear

It might be surprising to learn that the state mammal of New Mexico is the black bear. But there is a very good reason why this is. The infamous Smokey Bear used by the US Forest Service is based on a small black bear cub that was found in Lincoln National Forest here in New Mexico. This small injured cub was found  hiding in a tree in the forest just outside Capitan New Mexico. He was the inspiration behind the character of Smokey Bear. And this is one of the reasons why the black bear is now the state mammal of New Mexico.
